Entoku-in (圓徳院) is one of the sub-temple of the Kodai-ji located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City.

It is the place where Nene (ねね) who was the wife of Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI (豊臣秀吉) spent her later years.

She visited to Kodai-ji every day from this place to pray for the repose of Hideyoshi’s soul.
Therefore, the road connecting Kodai-ji and Entoku-in is called “Nene-no-michi (ねねの道:Nene’s road).”

So, building of the Fushimi Castle (伏見城) that was filled with their memories was reconstructed in this temple.

In addition, the north garden of this temple is designated as a places of scenic beauty.

So, I went to Entoku-in this time.

1.The history of Entoku-in

Let’s study the history of this temple with me before introducing Entoku-in (圓徳院).
I think that we can enjoy the sightseeing of this temple more by learning the history of it. XD

Entoku-in was built in 1605 by Toshifusa KINOSHITA (木下利房) who was the Nene’s nephew.
The posthumous Buddhist name of him is called ‘Entoku-in (圓徳院)’.
The name of this temple originated from his posthumous Buddhist name.

In the Battle of Sekigahara (関が原の戦い), he joined the West Camp.
However, because the west Camp was defeated, he had to be executed.

But, because Nene (ねね) who was his aunt entreated Ieyasu TOKUGAWA (徳川家康) who was the commander-in-chief of the east military, he avoided the death penalty.

For that reason, he thanked her very much.
So, he built this temple for her in 1605.
And, in 1624, this temple invited Rinzai Sect Kennin-ji Temple priest Sanko Joeki (三江紹益) to serve as a founder.

The Fushimi Castle (伏見城) was a place of the memories that Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI (豊臣秀吉) and Nene (ねね) spent together.
Therefore, building of the Fushimi Castle that was filled with their memories was reconstructed in this temple.

She spent the last 19 years of her life here.
For the last 19 years, it is said that she visited to Kodai-ji every day from this place to pray for the repose of Hideyoshi’s soul.

It is really Love’s work…!!
