This shrine is known as Mikaeri-tenjin or “hard-to-leave” shrine, because Michizane Sugawara, who was a popular poet, visited this shrine on his journey to Dazaifu, Kyushu, upon demotion, and he deeply expressed regret to leave this place. The autumn scenery over Hachijogaike Pond is an artistic sight. The autumn leaves look their best against the vibrant red-colored shrine. The garden takes on beautiful brocade-like colors. The azaleas here, around 150 years old, are very popular. They grow on either side of the approach to the shrine. The scenery is picturesque.
