Oharano-jinja Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Oharano, Nishigyo Ward, Kyoto City.

Because this Shinto shrine is a branch shrine of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, it is also called ‘Kyo-Kasuga (Kasuga of Kyoto)‘.
Therefore, it is counted as one of the Nijunisha (22 Shrines) which is the best rating of Shinto Shrine.

In addition, It is said that Murasaki Shikibu who is the author of the Tale of Genji loved this shrine.

Because there is in the foot of Mt. Oshio-yama, this Shinto shrine’s autumn leaves are very beautiful.

1.About Oharano-jinja Shrine

Ōhorano Shrine (大原野神社 Ōharano jinja?) is a Shinto shrine located in Nishikyō-ku, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
Ōhorano is dedicated to the Fujiwara tutelary kami, Amenokoyane, who was said to have assisted in the founding of the state.[1]

Peak of the autumn leaves:Mid November – Early December

I went on December 2, and there was not so many tourist on that day.
The condition of the colored leaves in that day was approximately over 100%.

●一の鳥居:Ichi no torii

This is Ichi no torii which is the entrance of this Shinto Shrine.

●二の鳥居:Ni no torii

This is Ni no torii in the entrance of the approache to a shrine.

●三の鳥居:San no torii

This is San no torii which is the entrance of the Main hall (Honden).

●中門・本殿:Chumon gate・Main hall (Honden)

This is Chumon gate of this shrine.
Main hall (Honden) is built inside of Chumon gate.

●瀬和井(せがい)の清水:Segai-Spring-Water

This is a spring water called ‘Segai-Spring-Water‘.
It is said that this spring water was used as first bath when Emperor Seiwa was born.

This is Koisawa-no-ike Pond.

This pond was made in imitation of Sarusawa-ike Pond which is one of the Southern capital eight beauty spots in Nara-koen Park.

千眼桜:(Sengan-Zakura:Cherry tree of 1,000 eyes)

This is Sengan-Zakura (Cherry tree of 1,000 eyes).
Because flowering time is very short, this cherry tree is called the rare cherry tree.

●若宮社(摂社):Wakamiya Shrine(Sessha Shrine)

This is Wakamiya Shrine(Sessha Shrine) which was built in the edge of the Koisawa-no-ike Pond.
Ame-no-Oshikumone-no-mikoto with the divine favor of huge harvest is enshrined in this Shinto shrine.

Goshuin of this shrine is “京春日 大原野神社(Kyokasuga  Oharanojinja)” which is the name of this shrine.
