Reiun-in (霊雲院) is a temple of the Tofuku-ji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and is one of a tatchu (sub-temple) of Tofuku-ji.

Tofuku-ji is the fourth grade of Kyoto Gozan (Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto), and it has a total of 25 sub-temples.
Those sub-temples are small temples but have a distinctive charm that big temple does not have.
In addition, those sub-temples have a history with the deep relationship with those main-temple.

So, when you go to Tofuku-ji, I recommend that you go to these sub-temples as well.

The highlight of this temple is two ‘Karesansui gardens (Japanese rock gardens)‘ which were designed by Mirei SHIGEMORI (重森三玲) who was a leading Japanese garden designer in the Showa period.
The Japanese gardens which he designed are all recognized as “modern art”!!

Because he had a very deep connection with Tofuku-ji, he designed the following gardens.

Tofuku-ji (東福寺) Hoji garden
Ryogin-an (龍吟庵:sub-temple of Tofuku-ji) garden
Komyo-in (光明院:sub-temple of Tofuku-ji) garden

And… this temple’s garden.

If you want to see the garden which is composed with a view of the world as seen from Zen sect Buddhism, please visit this temple!!

So, I visited Reiun-in this time.

1.The history of Reiun-in

Let’s study the history of this sub-temple with me before introducing of Reiun-in (霊雲院).
I think that we can enjoy the sightseeing of this sub-temple more by learning the history of it. XD

Reiun-in was founded in 1390 of the Muromachi period by Hoshu KIYO (岐陽方秀) who was the 80th chief priest of Tofuku-ji.
Because his Buddhist name was ‘Funin-donin (不二道人)’, this temple was called ‘Funin-an (不二庵)’ when it was founded.

And, in 1473 of the Muromachi period, this temple was changed to the name called “Reiun-in (霊雲院)” which is the current name.
‘Reiun (霊雲)’ has the meaning of the ‘holy cloud.’

In addition, this temple is also the place where Takamori SAIGO (西郷隆盛) held a secret meeting in the Meiji Restoration (明治維新) and was used as a Russian POW camp during the Russo-Japanese War.

This temple is small but had a very important role in history of Japan.

By the way, the keyword that I want to teach to you in this temple is the ‘Iai-seki (stone).’

It is the stone which was put in the center of the Karesansui garden (Japanese rock garden) named ‘Kusen-hakkai-no-niwa’ and is also the treasure of this temple.
reiunin-15

Why is this stone the treasure of this temple?
There was a following reason for it.

Shosetsu Shugen (湘雪守元) who was the 7th chief priest of this temple was born in the Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture of today).
So, he was close to the Higo-HOSOKAWAs which is one of the prestigious families of the Higo Province.

And the HOSOKAWAs tried to give a reward (money and territory) to him when he became the chief priest of this temple.

But he said.

‘These reward interferes with my ascetic practices.’
‘So, money and the territory are not necessary for me.’

He continued and said this.

‘But I am very happy about your consideration.’
‘So, if you donate a stone added to improve a garden’s appearance to me, I inherit that stone as treasure of the temple.”

Therefore the HOSOKAWAs donated the stone which was called ‘Iai-seki (stone)’ to him.
And as he said, this stone is put in the center of the garden as treasure of the temple now.

There are also things in this world that we can’t buy with money.
