Unryu-in Temple (Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City) is a Buddhist temple of the Sennyu-ji school of the Shingon Sect.
Its principal image is Yakushi Sanzon (three statues that comprise the Yakushi Triad).
Because the buddhist mortuary tablets of successive emperors are enshrined, the Japanese imperial crest that is in a shape of a chrysanthemum is designed in the garden of the precincts.
The view from the temple building is particularly beautiful.
Please try to go.
History of Unryu-in
Let’s study the history of this temple with me.
I think that we can enjoy sightseeing of this temple more by learning the history of it. XD
It was built in 1372, period of the northern and southern court, by the order of the Emperor Gokogon (後光厳天皇) who was emperor of the Northern Court.
The temple’s honorific mountain prefix is Rurisan and its principal image is Yakushi-Nyorai (Bhaisajyaguru).
The name of this temple, Unryu (雲龍), means dragon.
In the Buddhism, dragon is one of the Hachibushu (八部衆), eight deities who guard Buddhism.
This temple had deep relation to the successive Emperors of period of the Northern and Southern Court.
Especially, Emperor Goenyu (January 11, 1359 – June 6, 1393) who was the fifth Northern Court Emperor started the tradition of meeting to copy sutras by hand, and the temple is still known as a training hall for copying sutras.
The temple was later destroyed by fire in 1470 during the Onin War.
But it was reconstructed with the help of Emperor Go-Kashiwabara (後柏原天皇) who donated the imperial palace to the temple as the main hall.
In addition, the Buddhist mortuary tablets of successive emperors of northern courts are worshiped in Reimei-den Hall of this temple.
As mentioned above, because it has a deep connection to the Imperial family, high status of a Buddhist temple called Bekkaku-Honzan (special head temple) is given to this temple.
