Shusui-tei (拾翠亭) is a tea room located in Kyoto Gyoen National Garden in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City.

It is said that this tea room was built in the late Edo period about 200 years ago.

So, it’s a valuable building whose appearance and interior show the architecture of the Edo period.

Highlight of this tea house is ‘Beautiful scenery to look at from a tea room.’

History of Shusui-tei

Let’s study the history of this tea house with me before introducing of Shusui-tei (拾翠亭).

I think that we can enjoy the sightseeing of it more by learning the history of it. XD

It is said that this tea room was built in the late Edo period about 200 years ago.

In the old days, there was the family lineages which have the highest prestige called Gosekke (五摂家).

In those days, only the Gosekke was able to get important official positions such as the regent and the emperor’s chief adviser.

Shusui-tei (拾翠亭) was used as a villa of the “Kujo Family (九條家)” which was one of the Gosekke.

‘翠(Sui)’ of the kanji has the meaning of “Kingfisher”.

In old days, because many kingfishers lived in this pond, it is also said that it was named Shusui-tei.

This is a place full of nature from old days.
