1.History of the Ishiyama-dera

Let’s study the history of this temple with me before introducing of the Ishiyama-dera.
I think that we can enjoy the sightseeing of this temple more by learning the history of it. XD

Ishiyama-dera was founded in 747 of the Nara period by imperial prayer of Emperor Shomu (聖武天皇).
And the principle image of the temple is Nyoirin Kannon (如意輪観音:Bodhisattva of Compassion) and the founder was Roben (良弁).

There are many historical structures remaining in this temple.

Hon-do hall of this temple which was built in 1096 of the Heian period is also a national treasure, and is the oldest architecture in Shiga Prefecture.
ishiyamadera-14

In addition, it is said that Tahoto (two-storied) pagoda in this temple which was built in 1194 of the Kamakura period donated by MINAMOTO no Yoritomo is the oldest Tahoto pagoda in Japan.
ishiyamadera-28

By the way, the keyword of the history that I want to teach to you in this temple is ‘Murasaki Shikibu (紫式部)‘.
ishiyamadera-07

Because she is very famous, she is known by everybody.
Murasaki Shikibu is the most famous woman writer of the Heian period and is said to be an author of the Tale of Genji.

By the way, do you know her rival?

The answer is Sei Shonagon (清少納言) who was an author of the ‘Makura no soshi (枕草子:the Pillow Book)‘.

Because Murasaki Shikibu was very self-respecting, it is said that she criticized a work of Sei Shonagon.
It is said that she was a very difficult person.

The work that she left is the ‘Genji-Monogatari (the Tale of Genji)‘.

In the old days, it is said that Murasaki Shikibu visited to this temple many times.

Because this temple was a good locality, there was not a fight from old days.
So, a lot of precious cultural assets are left in this temple and the well-known cultured people such as Murasaki Shikibu visited this temple.

In addition, the scenery to see from Tsukimi-tei is called ’Ishiyama no Shugetsu (Autumn Moon at Ishiyama)’.
And this scenery is one of the eight views of Omi.

Because Murasaki Shikibu watched this scenery, it is said that she thought up the ‘Genji-Monogatari (the Tale of Genji)’.
