1.History of Yuzen-en garden

Let’s study the history of this garden with me before introducing Yuzen-en garden.
I think that we can enjoy the sightseeing of this garden more by learning the history of it. XD

Do you know ‘Yuzensai MIYAZAKI (宮崎友禅斎)‘ and ‘Yuzen (友禅:dyeing technique)‘??

Yuzensai MIYAZAKI was a painter of folding fan who was active in Kyoto during early to mid Edo period.
And, Yuzen is one of the traditional arts of Japan, and refers to dyeing technique that was designed by him who was a painter of folding fan in the Edo period.

This technique that he devised is called ‘Kyo-Yuzen (京友禅)’ in Kyoto and ‘Kaga-Yuzen (加賀友禅)’ in Kaga (Ishikawa).
It is said that ‘Kyo-Yuzen’ is highly abstract patterns and ‘Kaga-Yuzen’ is more painting-like.

Kyo-Yuzen is the art of such a design.

And clothes made by this design’s material are Kyo-kimono.

In the Edo period, it was said that “Luxury is the enemy!!” in Japan.

So, the people could not use gorgeous materials like gold and silver for clothes.
(In that era, there was the law which to prohibit luxury that was called Shashikinshirei (奢侈禁止令:luxury prohibiting law).)

But, after all, the people want to dress up!!

Because of that reason, instead of using luxurious materials, a technique which is called ‘Yuzen‘ that compete on design was born by Yuzensai.

And, this garden praised his achievement and was built in 1954.
Therefore, this garden was named ‘Yuzen-en’ after his name.
