Jizo-in Temple, located in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City, is a nonsectarian temple of the Rinzai sect.

Because it is surrounded by a bamboo grove, it’s also known as Take no Tera (a temple of bamboo).
And This temple is designated as the cultural assets environmental conservation district of Kyoto-shi.

This temple is also connected with the Zen priest Ikkyu Sojun who is known as “Ikkyuu’s Sayings”.
(It is said that he practiced asceticism here, during his childhood.)

Jizo-in which is the name of this temple comes from Jizo Bosatsu (Jizo Bodhisattva) which is the principal idol of this temple.

This temple’s sango (literally, “mountain name”), which is the title prefixed to the name of a Buddhist temple, is Kinugasayama.

This temple was founded in 1367 by Yoriyuki HOSOKAWA who was a Bakufu Kanrei (shogun deputy) between the Northern and Southern Courts period and the Muromachi
period.
He is a prime person of the Northern side in the Period of the Northern and Southern Court.
And he assisted the third Shogun of the Muromachi bakufu, Yoshimitsu ASHIKAGA of the early childhood, and negotiated the reconciliatory negotiation with the south side as a representative of the north sides.

5.Highlights of Jizo-in Temple

総門:So-mon gate (Main gate)

This is the So-mon gate (Main gate).

本堂:Hon-do hall (Main temple)

This is the Hon-do hall (Main temple).

Jizo Bosatsu (Jizo Bodhisattva) which is the principal image of this temple is enshrined in this building.

開福稲荷大明神:Kaifuku Inari Daimyojin Shrin

This is the Kaifuku Inari Daimyojin Shrin which has the divine favor of good-luck.

中門:Chu-mon gate

This is the Chu-mon gate.
There are the Hojo and the garden in the other side of the Chu-mon gate.

方丈と庭園(十六羅漢の庭):Hojo (Abbot’s Quarters) and 16 Rakan’s garden

This garden is a Hiraniwa-style Karesansui garden.
Because 16 stones put in this garden looks like the Rakan, it is called 16 Rakan’s garden.

細川頼之 墓所:Grave of Yoriyuki HOSOKAWA

This is a grave of Yoriyuki HOSOKAWA who is the founder of this temple.
This is the simple grave where only native rocks were piled up.

6.Goshuin of Jizo-in Temple

This Temple’s Sumigaki(The words which was written with a sumi(black ink)) is “本来無一物(Honrai-mu-ichimotsu)” which is the sentence of the sacred book of the Zen Buddhism.
This sentence means “all things are essentially nothingness”.

7.How to get to Jizo-in Temple

The nearest station of Jizo-in Temple is “Hankyu Arashiyama Line Matsuo Taisha Station”.
(We can also go by bus from “JR Kyoto Station”, “Hankyu Karasuma Station” and “Hankyu Arashiyama Station”.)
