Honzan-ji Temple (本山寺) is a Tendai Sect Buddhist temple located in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture.

Principal image is Bishamonten (毘沙門天 : Vaisravana).

It is said that it is one of the three Greatest Vaisravana’s (Bishamonten’s) Temple in Japan.

So this temple’s best highlight is Wooden standing statue of Vaisravana.


History of Honzan-ji

本山寺の歴史を刻むこま札

It was founded for 697 years of the Asuka period by EN no Gyoja (EN no Ozunu) who was the originator of Shugendo (修験道).

It has a history spanning 1300 years.

Temple buildings were constructed using funds donated by Prince Kaijo, son of the Emperor Konin, in the Nara period.

It was declining in power due to the “Yamazaki no tatakai (山崎の戦い)” (the battle at Yamazaki), but it was restored during the Edo period by Hideyori Toyotomi (豊臣秀頼).
