Umenomiya Taisha (梅宮大社) is a Shinto shrine located in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City.

It is famous as a plum-blossom (ume) viewing spots, just like the name.

Plum blossoms come out in March every year.

The highlight of this shrine is many ‘cats.’

They live free and easy in the precincts of this Shinto shrine!!

Mitsuaki IWAGO (岩合光昭) who is a famous animal photographer was also visited for coverage in this Shinto shrine.

History of Umenomiya-taisha

Let’s study the history of this shrine with me.

I think that we can enjoy sightseeing of this temple more by learning the history of it. XD

The origin of this shrine is not known, but one theory holds that it already was built in the Nara period.

Therefore this Shinto shrine will have the history more than 1,300 years.

It is also known as one of the Uji-sha (氏社).

So, it worships the Tachibana-uji (clan) (橘氏) which took an active role in ancient Japan.
