Jakko-in Temple is a temple of the Tendai sect located in Ohara, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City.
Its honorific mountain prefix is ‘Seiko-zan’ and temple’s title is ‘Gyokusen-ji Temple.’
It is said that it was founded by Prince Shotoku and the principal image is Rokumantai Jizo Bosatsu.
Because it is known as the place where Kenrei Mon-in who was the TAIRA no Kiyomori’s daughter lived in seclusion after the defeat of the Taira family, it is closely connected to “Heike Monogatari (The Tale of the Heike).”
It is also famous for its beautiful autumn leaves!
History of Jakko-in
Let’s study the history of this temple with me.
I think that we can enjoy sightseeing of this temple more by learning the history of it. XD
The village of Ohara in which Jakko-in Temple is located is said to be the place of aristocrats secluded themselves for a long time.
The origin of Jakko-in Temple is not known for sure.
It is said that it was constructed in 594 of the Asuka period by Prince Shotoku to pray for the soul of his late father, Emperor Yomei.
Afterwards, Kenrei Mon-in who was the TAIRA no Kiyomori’s daughter became the 3rd chief priest of this temple in 1185 of the Heian era.
The main hall was rebuilt by Katsumoto KATAGIRI during the Keicho era of the Edo period under the order of ‘Yodo-dono‘ (Lady Yodo) who was one of Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI’s concubines.
But it was destroyed by fire (arson) in 2000, and rebuilt in 2005.
