Ikka-in (一華院) is a temple of the Tofuku-ji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and is one of a tatchu (sub-temple) of Tofuku-ji.
Tofuku-ji is the fourth grade of Kyoto Gozan (Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto), and it has a total of 25 sub-temples.
Highlight of this temple is the garden which has the pine tree with graceful branches.
Ikka-in is only open to the public on specific days in autumn.
History of Ikka-in
Let’s study the history of this sub-temple with me before introducing of Ikka-in (一華院).
I think that we can enjoy the sightseeing of this sub-temple more by learning the history of it. XD
Ikka-in was founded in 1382 of the Muromachi period by Keneki Togen (東漸建易) who was the 67th chief priest of Tofuku-ji.
This temple became ruined afterwards, but it was revived in 1821 of the Edo period by Tenzui (天瑞) who was the priest of Reiun-in.
One sentence of ‘Dempoge (伝法偈)’ that is the teaching of the Zen is an origin of the name of this temple.
‘一華開五葉 結果自然成’
‘Ikka-Goyo (一華五葉)’ means ‘One flower opens with five beautiful petals.’
These petals represent our feelings like thankfulness or pure heart.
