Oshima is one of the meeting places of the international art festival in Setouchi.
This island was the island that isolated a leper for prejudice and discrimination in old days…
However, at present , all of this island becomes the national sanatorium for persons who recovered Hansen’s disease.
This island is a place which reconsider the sad history and shift my attention to a bright future…

1.Information for visitors

An application is necessary by all means to go to Ooshima.
In addition, you act with a tour guide by all means in Ooshima. (However, there is free time for approximately 20 minutes.)
★During the holding period of the art festival
・The numbered ticket is distributed at Takamatsu Port traveler terminal building.
You go to Oshima by a special boat. (The passage fare is free of charge.)
★Outside the holding period of the art festival
It is opened only on the second Saturday and the second Sunday.

2.About Oshima
All of this island becomes the national sanatorium for persons who recovered Hansen’s disease.
There are three kind of facilities which are not seen in the other islands so that the visually impaired person is easy to live in Oshima.
・A loudspeaker is installed in the crossing, and music plays.
・A handrail is installed in the sidewalk.
・A white line is pulled on a road.
This is a charnel to put a bone of the deceased person in this island.
It is a memorial service monument.
It is a monument made for a requiem named “Kazeno-mai”.
This is a stand of the stone which were used to perform an autopsy and a surgical operation.
There were the following institutions for a person isolated because of the Hansen’s disease in this island.
The place that reproduced a Japanese garden in Kyoto.
A church for Christians. (There is also a temple and the Shinto shrine.)
Buddhist statues which is in imitation of “88 places of Shikoku hallowed ground”.
I think that this island is a place which reconsider the sad history and shift my attention to a bright future…
